The artist tore his Achilles tendon in an accident. As a form of therapy, his wife bought canvas, paints and brushes to help bring him back from his sadness. This was the first painting created during this gloomy period.
This self-portrait depicts the man caught in a downpour but he does have a way out, with his umbrella.
